8 Prayers to Pray Over Your New Home

Perhaps you’re buying your first home, or maybe you’re moving after a divorce or the death of a spouse. Maybe you’re downsizing as you get older or need more space because your family is growing. Whatever your reason, we know that all good gifts come from the Lord (James 1:17), and a roof over your head is indeed a gift.

Because change can be both exhilarating and challenging, what better way to start this new chapter of your life than to walk through your new home and pray over it as you move from room to room? May the following prayers help guide you as you talk with the Lord.

1. The Front Entrance

Father God, thank you for this home. Thank you for providing for me in this way. Father, I acknowledge that this is your home, a gift you have given me for a time, and I pray that I will use this gift to your glory.

As I stand at the entrance to this home, I ask that you would bring many people through this door. I ask that you would prompt me to be hospitable and that this door would be known as an entrance to a welcoming, peaceful, loving space.

2. The Kitchen

Lord, I thank you for providing me with a kitchen. There are so many people in the world who have kitchens that are never used. They either don’t have anyone to cook for or don’t have any food to cook. I praise you for providing for me and ask that I never take that for granted.

I ask that you would give me the means and the energy to use this kitchen for the advancement of your kingdom. Bless this kitchen with family, friends, and even strangers so that I can share the blessings that you have given me.

3. The Eating Area

Father God, I thank you for this dedicated space for eating. I pray that many meals will be shared here. I ask that you not only give me the desire to be hospitable but you would also give me the means to do so.

Father, I ask that in the coming years, you would allow the conversation around this table to be honoring to you and encouraging to all to hear. I pray that this table would be a safe place for heart-level conversations and that all who sit here would leave with a better understanding of your goodness.

4. The Living Room

Lord, I thank you for this space to rest. I ask that my rest would honor you. Keep me from idleness and from wasting time on entertainment that is not pleasing to you. Protect my eyes and my heart as I watch television, scroll on my phone, read books, and play games. May my rest in this room restore my soul and not cause me to stumble into temptation.

I pray that you would fill this room with family and friends and that our conversations would be honest, kind, and life-giving. May this room be a safe haven for those in need and a place where people desire to come and fellowship.

5. The Bathroom

Father God, I’m thankful for modern facilities. I ask that you work in my heart. Keep me from standing in front of this mirror and comparing myself to others. Keep me lingering with my reflection while wishing it was different.

Keep me from vanity. Help me use this space to prepare for the day and present myself as your child. Remind me that I was made in your image, and I am your image-bearer, not an image-bearer of this broken world. Keep my eyes set on you, not on myself.

6. The Main Bedroom

Lord, whether single or married, I pray that whatever happens in this room will be pleasing to you. I pray that you will be honored by any conversation, daydreaming, entertainment, or sexual activity that takes place in this room. Keep me from temptation and all things impure.

Allow this space to be one of peace and tranquility – a place where I can rest from the trials of the day and be rejuvenated to face the days to come. Let this room serve as a reminder of the safe haven that is found in you.

7. The Other Bedrooms

Father, as I look at these other bedrooms, I ask that, in the years ahead, you would fill these rooms and use them for your purposes. May these rooms be a safe place for family, friends, and anyone you might bring my way who needs a glimpse of your loving kindness.

Would you please fill me with wisdom as you give me opportunities to love, comfort, and support anyone who stays in these rooms? Allow these walls to echo love and laughter. May memories be made in these rooms that point to you and your goodness.

8. The Yard

Lord, while I am so thankful for the yard this house sits on, I know it’s all too easy to be envious of what others have. Please keep me in a posture of humility and thankfulness for what you have given me. May I always be satisfied in you and where you choose to place me.

I pray that this space would be used for rich fellowship and hospitality. Allow this yard to be a safe place for all of my neighbors. Let this be a place where your presence is known and your goodness is proclaimed.

Regardless of the size or monetary value of your home, it can be a place that honors the purposes of the Lord, and it can serve as a safe haven for you and everyone in your life. May you pray over your home while it is new and as the years pass by. May your home be known as a safe place that honors the Lord – a place where all are welcomed and shown the love of Christ.
