3 Biblical Reasons You Should be Praying for Bullies

    May 19, 2015 /

When our oldest son was in the first grade, he came home from school complaining about every kid (and parent’s) nightmare…a bully. Apparently this boy was not only harassing classmates during class, in the hallway lineup, and at the lunch table, but he was preying on kids smaller than himself and pinning them down in a choke-hold on the playground. We gave our son some practical advice on dealing with bullies, but then we armed him with his best defense: prayer. I explained to our son that people hurt for different reasons. We sometimes hurt on the outside, like when we get cuts and bruises. But sometimes we hurt on the…

Prayer for our most influential people

    April 21, 2015 /

I heard on the radio today that TIME Magazine has issued their list of the most influential people of 2015. As usual, there were names on the list I didn’t recognize, there were names that made me smile and names that made me roll my eyes. But, there was one name in particular that got my attention…Kim Kardashian. Last November I saw two posts that caught my eye, “What you should tell your teen (and yourself) about Kim Kardashian” and “Things I plan to tell my teenage boys about the nude pictures of Kim Kardashian”. While I agreed with what these articles had to say,  I was struck by how…

    What Fantasy Teaches Us

    March 25, 2015 /

I recently took my sons to hear a local symphony play all our favorite songs from Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Star Wars…and yes, much to my boys’ embarrassment, I cried. What can I say? Music moves me. But really, it was more than that; it was knowing what the music was doing in the minds of everyone in the room. You see, while we were packed tight in our seats, listening intently to the rumble of the drums, the high pitch of the piccolo and the deep moan of the cello, we began to dream. If only for a moment, we were mixing potions, flicking our wands…

    Should I always feel hope?

    March 5, 2015 /

I’m just as passionate about watching movies as I am about reading books, and one of my favorite movies is Phoebe in Wonderland. If you’ve seen the movie and you know my struggle with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), it shouldn’t surprise you that I’m slightly obsessed with this movie. Phoebe is a nine year-old girl who has OCD tendencies and, by the end of the movie, is diagnosed with Tourette’s Syndrome (TS) – or as Phoebe says, “Gilles de la Tourette  syndrome. It’s a beautiful name, I think.” I’ve watched this movie countless times, watching Phoebe, relating most to her character as I remember my own childhood; but seeing pieces…

    The woman I don’t want to be…

    January 15, 2015 /

If you’ve seen the movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, I’m sure you laughed when Maria Portokalos says, “Let me tell you something, Toula. The man is the head, but the woman is the neck. And she can turn the head any way she wants.” You laughed at that, right? I did. Another great line we all like to quote is, “If momma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy!” There was a post making its rounds on Facebook recently that said, “Arguing with a woman is like getting arrested. Everything you say can and will be used against you!” We women laugh at these silly quotes because we know there’s some…

    Interview with Author, Mark Eckel

    December 17, 2014 /

I have the privilege of calling Mark Eckel my friend. I have learned so much from this man, in casual conversation and through his writing.  If you are not familiar with Mark and his work, I highly suggest you get your hands on one (or both) of these books! You won’t regret it! A little about your writing: You have a new book out within a year of your last book. How could you write another book so quickly? My first book I Just Need Time To Think: Reflective Study as Christian Practice was based on a series of 52 essays I wrote in 2009-10. I organized the essays into…

    Interview with Author, Josh Clark

    December 3, 2014 /

I recently had the privileged of interviewing Josh Clark. I’m intrigued by his latest book, Accuser. I hope this interview sparks your interest as much as it did mine! A little about your writing: What is the title of your book? The title of my newest book, and my first for adult readers, is Accuser.  It is a departure from my norm, as I have written for young adults in the past. (The Dakota Lester Series, The McGurney Chronicles) Get us excited about your book! Tell us a little about it! Accuser is a novel about the battle within all of us.  It begins with a man taking diner patrons hostage…
